In the Heights was the Broadway show that put playwright and composer Lin-Manuel Miranda in the spotlight. Nominated for 13 Tony Awards in 2008, Miranda’s production won Best Musical, Best Original Score, Best Choreography, and Best Orchestrations. It also won a Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album and was nominated for the 2009 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. In the Heights is a moving musical about pursuing your dreams and finding your place in the world; it will open at the Annapolis Summer Garden Theatre (ASGT) on August 3, 2017.
In the Heights tells the tale about the residents of a largely Dominican-American neighborhood in Washington Heights, New York City. It is a community where the air is filled with the rhythm of music made by three generations. For youth, the place is filled with dreams, hopes, and pressures, along with rapid change. Perhaps the biggest struggle is found within, having to choose which traditions to retain and which to discard. After Usnavi, the owner of the corner bodega, reveals he has sold a winning lottery ticket worth $96,000, the people of the neighborhood begin fantasizing how they would use the small fortune to realize their dreams. Set to a Latin beat and featuring mesmerizing choreography, the musical tells a unique American story, a joyful celebration of a tightly-knit community and their urban life.
The Annapolis Summer Garden Theatre celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2016. Over the past five decades, this theatrical showcase has become one of Annapolis’ most cherished summer traditions. Located downtown, the perfect prelude to an ASGT musical is dinner at one of the city’s many fine restaurants nearby, followed by a pleasant walk during a warm summer night. The theatre offers intimate outdoor seating with a view of the moon and stars above. An enjoyable performance and a leisurely stroll back to their accommodations will complete a romantic evening for couples visiting Annapolis.
Performances are scheduled from Thursday to Sunday at 8:30 p.m., August 3 to September 3, 2017. The musical is rated PG.
