The United States Naval Academy (USNA) sets aside one week for a celebration of its latest graduating class. It is a week filled with pride, tradition, and ceremony that cap every midshipman’s career in Annapolis. 2017’s Commissioning Week will begin on Friday, May 19 and finish with the famous graduation ceremony at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium on Friday, May 26 which culminates with white caps thrown high into the air.
Although you may not know someone graduating, Commissioning Week provides several events that are available to the public. Those who attend will get a good sense of the tradition and history of the United States Naval Academy. The most spectacular event will be a breathtaking air show given by the world-famous Blue Angels.
Blue Angels History
Featuring aviators from the Navy and Marines, the Blue Angels is the U.S. Navy’s flight demonstration squadron that was founded in 1946. Currently piloting the McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet, the Blue Angels still use aerial maneuvers and techniques that were first seen during their inaugural 1946 season.
Approximately 11 million people attend the squadron’s air shows annually. As part of their public relations duties, the Blue Angels team members also entertain more than 50,000 people annually in hospitals and schools. An estimated 260 million spectators have been thrilled by the Blue Angels since they first flew in 1946.
Fans who come to watch the Blue Angels air show congregate on the Severn River’s banks on the Naval Academy campus to get a great view of the astounding aerial acrobatics. Below is the Blue Angels’ schedule during Commissioning Week 2017:
Tuesday, May 23 – Over the Severn River between 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. for circling and arrival and between 1:45 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. for flight rehearsal.
Wednesday, May 24 – Over the Severn River between 1:45 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. for a flight demonstration.
Friday, May 26 – Above the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium for the traditional flyover during graduation.
