Historic Inn in Annapolis Perhaps America’s most enduring singer-songwriter and eternally tied to the classic hits “American Pie“, “Vincent (Starry Starry Night)”, “Castles in the Air”, “And I Love You So” and “Crying”, Don McLean will be performing in Annapolis at the Rams Head On Stage on Thursday, July 6, 2017. Since topping the Billboard music charts with “American Pie” in 1972, McLean has won more than 40 gold and platinum records globally and was inducted into the Songwriters’ Hall of Fame in 2004.

McLean’s world-renowned classic, “American Pie”, has been described as “a sprawling, impressionistic ballad inspired partly by the deaths of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. Richardson (The Big Bopper) in a plane crash on February 3, 1959.” The hit made the expression “The Day the Music Died” popular as a reference to the tragic event.

Recorded on May 26, 1971, “American Pie” made its radio debut on New York’s WNEW-FM and WPLJ-FM to commemorate the closing of Fillmore East, the famous New York concert hall. Subsequently “American Pie” achieved number one status on the Billboard Hot 100 from January 15 to February 5, 1972. To this day, the song is McLean’s most successful single by far. Remarkably, the hit’s lengthy running time of 8:36 needed both sides of a 45 rpm single and is the longest song to become No. 1.

McLean still tours North America and recently performed overseas with stops throughout Europe in 2012, Australia in 2013, and two UK and European tours in 2015. In June 2011, he played for an adoring crowd of 100,000 at the Glastonbury Festival in England. In 2014, he performed at California’s Stagecoach Country Music Festival.
