History

Mrs. Lee of Annapolis began her founding efforts in 1952. The Maryland State Fair Board approved her proposal, and the first Anne Arundel County Fair was held at the old Labrot Race Track near Sandy Point that September. The next year, AACF transferred to Sandy Point State Park, then in 1984, the fair made Crownsville its permanent home.

Legacy

As the years passed, the fair became the strongest champion of the region’s agriculture and home arts, which are gradually disappearing as once plentiful farmlands become developed. The fair allows the whole family to learn about Anne Arundel County’s rural history. Mrs. Lee’s welcoming motto “Come to the Fair” still holds true after all this time.

The Fair Giant

In December 1990, Uncle Harve, the giant lumberjack statue on the Baldwin Service Center roof, was lowered to the ground after reigning there for almost 15 years. In April 1991, the Baldwin family donated him to the Anne Arundel County Fair, where the 20-foot figure modeled after Paul Bunyon now stands watch holding a welcome sign at the entrance.
