historic Inn, lodging, Annapolis MDA renowned theater group, The Colonial Players of Annapolis, will be celebrating the holidays with a performance of the beloved American Christmas classic It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play. What makes this adaptation of director Frank Capra’s Hollywood cinematic masterpiece so interesting is that it will be performed as a live 1940s radio broadcast, recreating the atmosphere of the bygone era. The tale of idealistic George Bailey will be told with the help of an ensemble playing a few dozen characters while he ponders taking his life on Christmas Eve.

The Film

Produced in 1946, It’s a Wonderful Life is a fantasy comedy film that was co-written, produced, and directed by Frank Capra. Adapted from “The Greatest Gift”, a short story Philip Van Doren Stern wrote in 1939, the motion picture is deemed to be one of the most favorite films in American film history, and it is traditionally watched during the Christmas season.

Star James Stewart plays George Bailey, a depressed man who has forsaken his own aspirations to help others. As he seriously considers suicide on Christmas Eve, his guardian angel Clarence appears and shows him every life he has made better and how starkly different for the worse his community of Bedford Falls would have been if he had never existed.

Critically acclaimed, It’s a Wonderful Life received five Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture. It was also recognized by the American Film Institute as one of the 100 finest American films ever produced, placing number one as the most inspirational American movie in history.
