Playing April 14 to May 21, 2017 at Annapolis’ Compass Rose Theater, George Bernard Shaw’s classic play, Pygmalion, the story of Eliza Doolittle and her professor, Henry Higgins, is a captivating and hilarious commentary on the silliness of British class structure. The play is very topical and timely in today’s society, which allows appearance to trump over reality so frequently. The clever plot intertwines with wisdom and wit, creating a masterpiece of comedy. Amidst all the laughter, we come to realize that true values of integrity, honesty, and love are what will forever matter in our lives.
George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion premiered on October 16, 1913 at the Hofburg Theatre in Vienna, Austria. In Greek mythology, Pygmalion fell in love with one of his sculptures, which then came to life. The myth was a popular subject for English playwrights of the Victorian era. Shaw’s play has been adapted on many occasions, most famously as the musical My Fair Lady and the motion picture of the same title.
Wikipedia’s Synopsis: “Professor of phonetics Henry Higgins makes a bet that he can train a bedraggled Cockney flower girl, Eliza Doolittle, to pass for a duchess at an ambassador’s garden party by teaching her to assume a veneer of gentility, the most important element of which, he believes, is impeccable speech. The play is a sharp lampoon of the rigid British class system of the day and a commentary on women’s independence.”
