The Annapolis Shakespeare Company (ASC) is well into their fourth season as a fully professional theater group, maintaining its prestigious standing as the premier regional company for Shakespeare and the classics located in Maryland. At the beginning of 2017, ASC moved into a new 8,100 square foot building that features an intimate 99-seat blackbox theatre and a lobby bar large enough to entertain the visitors for a performance.
Much Ado About Nothing
William Shakespeare is considered to have written his comedy Much Ado About Nothing in 1598 and 1599 as he was nearing the midpoint of his career. Published in 1623, the play was included in the Bard’s First Folio. Via “noting”, which sounded like “nothing” in Shakespeare’s era and meant rumor, gossip, or overhearing, the characters Benedick and Beatrice are fooled into confessing their love for one another, while Claudio mistakenly believes Hero has been unfaithful and rejects her at their wedding ceremony. By the play’s conclusion, Beatrice and Benedick band together to right each wrong, and all the characters dance to celebrate the two couples getting married.
Schedule & Director
ACS’s production of Much Ado About Nothing will be performed from September 29 to October 29, 2017 at the Annapolis Shakespeare Theatre on 1804 West Street, Annapolis, Maryland. Directed by Sally Boyett, the play will be a polished rendition of Shakespeare’s comedy featuring witty dialogue. Boyett is ASC’s Founding Artistic Director with numerous directing and choreography credits, and she is an accomplished actress as well. Her previous production of the comedy garnered superlative praise from DC Metro Review: “A brilliant rendition of a wonderful comedy with impressive costumes, a stunning set, and sensational talent; this is sure to keep your summer alive!”
The Annapolis Shakespeare Company pride themselves on being “the premiere professional theatre company in Annapolis” and the only one in the Chesapeake Bay area dedicated to the production of plays by Shakespeare and other classics. The ASC mission: “Produce bold, re-imagined, entertaining and accessible interpretations of classical and contemporary plays and musicals with a core commitment to the works of Shakespeare and other major dramatists.”
