Local citizens and visitors from all over the world have been slaking their thirst for more than 300 years in Annapolis’ numerous historic taverns and pubs. Ranging from esteemed founding fathers of the United States of America to roguish pirates of the high seas, travelers have come to Maryland’s historic capital for drinking, dining, and entertainment in these bars. Now regular tourists can visit the most famous of these historic drinking holes on the Twisted History Tavern Tour.
The Twisted History Tavern Tour is a walking tour through Annapolis’ Historic District that lasts about two hours over a short distance of half a mile. It will take attendees into several of the best-known taverns in the city.
Visitors will spend approximately 20 to 30 minutes at each bar, and will be able to enjoy a cocktail or mug of beer while discovering the interesting and colorful history of each tavern from stories told by a knowledgeable guide.
The shocking stories told at each tavern will include the scandals, crime, and violence that Annapolis has seen over three centuries on the Chesapeake Bay. A learned Twisted Historian will fill in the details regarding the who, where, how, and why of each sordid tale.
You will discover the pub that was formerly the most frequented brothel of the city. You will learn all about the tavern where some of America’s founding fathers had to be chased out because of their rowdy drunken revelry.
There will be at least three taverns visited on each tour; locations visited may include some of the following:
- Middleton Tavern
- Rams Head Tavern
- Federal House Bar & Grille
- McGarvey’s Saloon
- Dock Street Bar & Grill
- 1747 Pub at the Reynolds Tavern
- Drummer’s Lot at the Maryland Inn
- Harry Brownes
- Galway Bay
Limited to adults 21 years of age and over. Drinks are not included. The tour will depart from the Maryland Inn on 16 Church Circle, Annapolis. Rated 4.5 stars out of 5 from 98 reviews on TripAdvisor.
