The Navy, Alabama, Memphis, and Pittsburgh men’s basketball teams will compete at the 4th Annual Veterans Classic on Veterans Day, Friday, November 10, 2017 in Annapolis. Held at the Naval Academy’s Alumni Hall, this terrific event opens the college basketball season. Alabama plays Memphis at 6:30 p.m. ET, and Pitt takes on host Navy at 9:00 p.m. ET.
The 3 teams visiting Annapolis will also get a seldom-seen look into the lives of Midshipmen. The student athletes from Alabama, Memphis, and Pittsburgh will take a rare tour of the Naval Academy that will feature the ‘Yard,’ the noon meal formation, and they will dine with the USNA Brigade at King Hall.
Alabama Crimson Tide vs. Memphis Tigers
Third-year head coach Avery Johnson leads Alabama. The Crimson Tide were 19-15 with a Southeastern Conference (SEC) record of 10-8 tied for fifth place last year. They should improve this season, boasting the program’s best recruiting class in history and retuning three top scorers.
The Tigers are led by Tubby Smith, who won an NCAA title with the Kentucky Wildcats in 1998 and has notched numerous Coach of the Year honors over his career. Memphis was 19-13 last season with a 9-9 AAC Conference record to finish fifth. Sporting a veteran roster and a recruiting class hauling in five-star recruit Collin Sexton, the Tigers continue Smith’s rebuilding program.
Navy Midshipmen vs. Pitt Panthers
Seventh-year head coach Ed DeChellis, who formerly coached at Penn State, led the Navy Midshipmen to 16-16 overall and 10-8 Patriot League conference record for fourth place last season. Navy will be counting on points from Shawn Anderson, who topped the Midshipmen in scoring as a junior during the 2016-17 season with a per game average of 12.2 points.
For a second season, Pittsburgh will be lead by Kevin Stallings, who led the Panthers to a 16-17 overall and 4-14 ACC conference record for a woefully unlucky 13th place last season. Stallings will have a tough job during the 2017-18 season with a very young squad, featuring at minimum seven players who are junior-college transfers or freshmen. The Panthers will return no starters and only four players from last season.
