James Brice House Hard Hat Tours for Summer 2019

The James Brice House celebrated its 250th birthday in 2017 and has been undergoing restoration to its 18th century grandeur since. Fortunately, the National Historic Landmark can still be seen by the public on select days during Summer 2019.

Historic Annapolis hosts a Hard Hat Tour that lets visitors discover the workings of a preservation project up close. They will learn all about the original craftsmen who built the house and the modern techniques for restoring it today. Attendees will also hear fascinating stories about the people who lived and toiled inside the mansion.

History & Preservation

James Brice was a lawyer and served as the mayor of Annapolis from 1782 to 1783 and 1787 to 1788. He then became Maryland’s active governor in 1792. In 1767, Brice started constructing his Georgian brick mansion after his father, Judge Brice, passed away. The Brice family owned the home until 1874.

In 1970, the James Brice House was named a National Historic Landmark. Nine years later, the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftsmen bought the property.

In 1998, archaeologists uncovered caches of hoodoo, spiritual offerings that were hidden by slaves.

The State of Maryland acquired the mansion and its grounds in 2014. Historic Annapolis has overseen its maintenance, management, and restoration of the landmark since.
