Historic Inn, Hotel, Annapolis, LodgingSandy Point State Park (SPSP) is the spot if you want to spend a day at the beach in Annapolis. Open all year long, this 786-acre Maryland State Park is located on the northwestern shore of the Chesapeake Bay and offers breathtaking views of the waterway and the magnificent bridge that spans it. The following will highlight what a day’s visit to Sandy Point State Park can offer.

The park’s South Beach offers areas for sunbathing after an invigorating swim in the Chesapeake. Lifeguards are on duty 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays, and 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekends and holidays, from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

Nature Viewing

Bird watching is a favorite pastime for many visitors at Sandy Point. Situated on the Eastern Flyway, the park is a prime location for spotting migratory waterfowl. SPSP is also home to a herd of goats that dine on invasive shrubs and vines, improving the health of Corcoran Woods, a forest 215 acres in size. Located on the northwest section of the park and overseen by the Maryland Park Service, Corcoran is a nature preserve for education, science, and beauty.

The Symbi Trail provides views of a pine forest and leads to marshes filled with wildlife. A short trail close to the parking lot for small craft gives birdwatchers wooded cover ideal for watching Maryland’s distinctive waterfowl. There are also 4 miles of trails for hiking and jogging in the Corcoran Woods.

Grassy picnic areas can be found next to South Beach, where bathrooms and a children’s playground are also located. For those who like to barbecue, there are grills and picnic tables available. The park’s marina store offers supplies for cooking.

Fishing & Crabbing

Fishing is allowed in areas that are designated, including rock jetties and a fishing pier.  Fishing equipment, bait and supplies can be purchased at the marina store. The Chesapeake Bay blue crab is a delicious, and they can be caught from the fishing and crabbing pier located at the south end of the boat ramps.

Park personnel are very proud of the park’s marina facility, which includes 22 boat launching ramps. Weather permitting, motorboats may be rented during late spring, summer, and early fall.
