The history of Annapolis would be incomplete if the city’s maritime heritage on the Chesapeake Bay were not acknowledged. The Annapolis Maritime Museum (AMM) was built in 1990 to house materials that commemorate and illustrate this important aspect of Maryland’s capital for the purpose of preservation, research, education, and enjoyment of the public. AMM is a state-of-the-art educational facility, an exhibition gallery, and a community assembly hall located in Annapolis’ Eastport district. This two-part article will cover the tours the museums offers. Museum hours are from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday to Sunday.
Private Museum Tour
Trained docents will guide a fascinating one-hour tour of AMM’s permanent exhibit. Attendees will learn about the Chesapeake Bay environment in the ecology corner and observe a feeding of sea creatures in its 850-gallon aquarium. Seafood harvesting from the region’s waters, along with how workers at McNasby’s factory in Eastport once processed seafood, will be covered. Staff members will answer questions and share artifacts and photos not available during the standard free tours.
For availability, call (410) 295-0104, ext. 13. Admission is $8 per person, and it is recommended for groups of 12 to 15 people.
If you would like to explore the AMM with loved ones or friends, staff can make the museum available for one hour for your family or group upon special request. A staff member will give your group a 10-minute tour, which includes a crab and fish feeding. Attendees are allowed to explore the museum after the tour for the remaining 50 minutes.
For availability, call (410) 295-0104, ext. 13. Admission is $2 per person, and it is recommended for groups of 1 to 12 people.
Exhibit Audio Tour
Intended for visitors to enjoy tour information on their personal audio devices, the AMM audio tour lasts for about 25 minutes. Narration guides listeners through “Oysters on the Half Shell”, a permanent exhibit. Annapolis’ maritime history is told through the stories of people who lived and worked on the waters of Chesapeake Bay.
Admission is free, with headphones available for $1.00.
Part 2 will cover AMM’s Walking Tour and Specialty Tours.
