The Colonial Players, a renowned theater group based in Annapolis will be opening 2017 with a very topical play after our country’s bruising national election. Director Ruben Vellekoop will helm the political drama The City of Conversation, playwright Anthony Giardina’s intriguing exploration of the politics of a prominent Georgetown family. Performance dates are scheduled from January 13 to January 28, 2017.
The year is 1979, and Washington D.C. was a city where people from both sides of the aisle were still collegial and spoke to each other. Political opponents fought tooth and nail in Congress, and reconciled over cocktails and dinner afterwards. However, the landscape of American political discourse was about to be transformed over the period The City of Conversation covers – the administrations of six presidents over 3 decades.
Socialite Hester Ferris hosts Georgetown dinner parties that influence American politics, but she discovers her own son may now be out of reach when he arrives with a Reagan-admiring girlfriend and an astonishing conservative point of view. Ferris is eventually forced to either preserve her family or defend her causes.
“Terrific … Smart, literate, funny. Mr. Giardina’s stimulating play illuminates the emotional toll that living in such a house divided (and a country divided) can take on its inhabitants.” – The New York Times
“Stirring and entertaining!” – Entertainment Weekly
“Exhilarating … a touching story of personal sacrifice.” – The Washington Post
“An intelligent, provocative, incisive drama about politics, people, ideals and principles, with razor-sharp dialogue.” – Huffington Post
