Founding member Paul Kantner was inspired by the collective spirit of the 1960s when he co-founded Jefferson Airplane in 1965, and it has continued to sustain him up to today. This creative team approach led to the success of the band, which was renamed Jefferson Starship in 1974. From 1974 to 1984, the group produced eight gold and platinum albums, notched twenty hit singles, and packed concerts around the world.
The Present Band
Nowadays, Kantner and Jefferson Starship focus on keeping their legacy of great music relevant for the 21st century. After all these years, they still challenge themselves artistically, endeavoring to stay faithful to their approach to music. Below are the other members of the band:
Co-founder David Freiberg co-wrote and sings one of Jefferson Starship’s immortal hit songs, “Jane.” For his wisdom and patience, Freiberg is considered the group’s guru and Buddha.
Donny Baldwin, a drummer, was a member of the Elvin Bishop Band and Jerry Garcia Band. He was a member of Jefferson Starship from 1981 to 1989. After touring and recording with numerous notable artists, Donny reunited with the band in 2008.
Cathy Richardson signed up in 2008, and her role as a lead singer mirrors that of the original performer, Grace Slick. She played the lead character of Janis Joplin in the original Off Broadway cast of Love Janis. Richardson is also a Grammy nominee.
Chris Smith teamed with Jefferson Starship in 1998 as a keyboardist. His music has been heard on “CSI” and the Academy Awards telecast.
Lead guitarist Jude Gold is known for his innovation; he came aboard on 48-hour notice for a 10-country concert tour when Slick Aguilar had to leave the band because of a life-threatening condition.
