Overview

Written by Samuel and Bella Spewack, Kiss Me, Kate combines the musical version production of Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew and the comedic struggle between Fred Graham, the musical’s director, producer, and star, and his ex-wife Lilli Vanessi, who is also the leading lady.

Inspired by Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma!, Kiss Me, Kate was the first work Porter wrote wherein music and lyrics were firmly integrated with the script. The musical subsequently became Porter’s most successful show. It was his only Broadway production that ran for more than 1,000 performances. Kiss Me, Kate won the very first Tony Award for Best Musical in 1949.
