Historic Inn, LodgingVisit Annapolis and make history at night by taking the Holiday Candlelight Stroll (HCS) during the holidays. Organized by Watermark, the HCS is a tour led by a Colonial period-dressed guide, who leads guests by candlelight through the city’s historic district. The tour climaxes with a visit to the Hammond Harwood House, which will be adorned with holiday decorations. Returning for its third year, the Holiday Candlelight Stroll has been popular with attendees seeking glimpses of Christmases past.

The Stroll

Attendees will have their way lit by glowing lanterns as they walk along the streets of Annapolis’ historic district, passing Victorian townhouses, colonial mansions, and gift shops. During the enjoyable 60-minute walking tour, the guide will discuss how evergreens, Christmas trees, Yule logs, and other customs took on their significance during the holiday season. Afterwards, there will be a 30-minute guided tour of the Hammond Harwood House.

Hammond Harwood House

A National Historic Landmark, the Hammond Harwood House (HHH) is a grand specimen of 18th Century architecture. The house is the only remaining work of colonial academic architecture principally inspired by a plate in Andrea Palladio’s I Quattro Libri dell’Architettura (The Four Books of Architecture) (1570). Designed by architect William Buckland for wealthy farmer Matthias Hammond of Anne Arundel County, Maryland, HHH is a testament to the commitment of Annapolitans to the preservation of their city’s history and heritage. The guided tour will highlight the house’s most outstanding features, including its highly-refined design, paintings by Charles Willson Peale, and furniture by John Shaw. Every holiday season, regional garden clubs decorate Hammond Harwood in a new 19th Century theme, and this year it is “At Home with the Loockermans.”
