Gibson's Lodging Blog - Fishing and crabbingIf you want to catch fish or crabs, you must follow the State of Maryland’s rules and regulations.

If you are under 16 years of age,  you are exempt from State licensing regulations. Anyone 16 years of age or older needs to be sure to follow the rules in their age bracket and the type of fishing or crabbing they are planning to do.

For fishing, a nontidal license or a Chesapeake Bay and Coastal Sport Fishing license is required in most situations.

Two of the biggest exemptions to that general rule are for charter boats and active-duty military personnel.

If you fish from a designated license-free fishing spot, you are exempt from having a fishing license, such as the old drawbridge pier at Jonas Green Park on the Severn River. If you live on waterfront property, you can fish or crab without a license but must register with the Department of Natural Resources fisheries office.

There are various fees for licenses such as tidal or nontidal, and resident or nonresident.

For crabbing, Maryland residents need a $5 license if using a trotline, collapsible traps, seines or net rings. A recreational crabber may crab without a license any time from docks, piers, bridges, boats and shorelines using only dip nets and any number of hand lines, catching up to 2 dozen male hard crabs and 1 dozen soft crabs and male peelers or a combination of male peeler and soft crab.

A recreational license is not required in the Atlantic Ocean, coastal bays and their waterways.

A Maryland freshwater fishing license or saltwater fishing license can be purchased online from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources or from a Maryland Department of Natural Resources Service Center throughout the state of Maryland. Fishing licenses in Maryland must be purchased each year, and are only good for a full year from the date of purchase.  Residents may purchase a 7 day or 3 day nontidal waters and 7 day licenses in tidal waters of the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean Coastline,  and nonresidents can only purchase this for a 3 day trip.
