The Music Department of the United States Naval Academy will be presenting its annual Organ Recital on Friday, April 5, 2019 at 7 p.m. in the Naval Academy Chapel. Monte Maxwell, the Director of Chapel Music and Chapel Organist of the Naval Academy, will be the organist for the performance.
Naval Academy Chapel Organ
Manufactured by Boston’s Hutchins Organ Company, the Naval Academy Chapel’s original organ was installed in 1908. Subsequently, the Moeller Organ Company of Maryland built a bigger instrument in 1940 for the newly expanded chapel.
Over time, the organ has been improved and modified. These enhancements have been funded by donations from generous individuals and academy classes. The organ now features both pipe and digital voices, totaling 268 ranks, 522 drawknobs, 796 total controls, 15,688 equivalent pipes, and two control consoles.
Monte Maxwell, Organist
Maxwell earned his undergraduate degree at Texas Christian University and his graduate degree from New York’s Juilliard School. At the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, he earned the Artist Diploma, their most prestigious diploma in Organ Performance.
Maxwell has traveled to Canada, Europe, and South America to perform for audiences in many churches, concert halls, and cathedrals. Impressive venues include the Lincoln Center, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, the Kennedy Center, and St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican.
As Staff Organist for Philadelphia’s renowned John Wanamaker Grand Court Organ, Maxwell performed weekly on the largest playing pipe organ in the world. Along with performers on Broadway, he has played with artists at the Metropolitan Opera, New York City Opera, the New York Philharmonic, and the Philadelphia Orchestra.
His yearly All Saints’ Day Organ Concert has become a beloved event at the Naval Academy. The performance is typically standing-room only, attracting 3,000 spectators to the Naval Academy Chapel.
