On Wednesday, May 1, 2019, Historic Annapolis will host a very special event at the William Paca House honoring Marquis de Lafayette, a remarkable French nobleman who fought for American independence. Titled “Brave Soldier of Fame: Lafayette in Annapolis”, Senior Historian Glenn E. Campbell of Historic Annapolis will discuss the long and cordial relations between Maryland’s scenic seaside city and the heroic Frenchman.
Campbell will tell tales of Lafayette’s several visits to Annapolis, which were over a period of 50 years. Apparently the French aristocrat and Maryland’s capital had a great fondness for one another. His first two visits to Annapolis in 1777 and 1781 involved military missions. After the American Revolution ended, Lafayette’s last two visits in 1784 and 1824 were in peace and for pleasure.
William Paca House
William Paca served three terms as Maryland’s Governor. He became one of the United States of America’s founding fathers by signing the Declaration of Independence. A Renaissance man, Paca designed the Georgian architecture of his mansion, which was constructed from 1763 to 1765.
In 1971, the William Paca House and Garden was designated a National Historic Landmark. Located in Annapolis’ historic district, the grounds are comprised of an 18th century Georgian mansion and a two-acre garden that was restored to its original grandeur through archaeology and a 1772 painting by Charles Wilson Peale.
