Hotel, Inn. Annapolis MDCurrently in their fourth season as a fully professional theater group, the Annapolis Shakespeare Company (ASC) continues to uphold their outstanding reputation as a top regional company for Shakespeare and the classics based in Maryland. In January 2017, they moved into an impressive new 8,100 square foot facility housing a 99-seat blackbox theater that features a spacious lobby bar.

Building on their momentum, ASC also welcomed Tony Award nominee and Helen Hayes Award-winning director, Donald Hicken, to their staff as Resident Director. Hicken will direct Shakespeare’s classic tragedy Richard III, which will open May 19 and run though June 11, 2017. ASC describes his production as “A fast paced, dynamic, suspense thriller!”

Richard III

A historical play written by William Shakespeare in 1592, Richard III depicts the Machiavellian rise to the throne and brief reign of King Richard III of England. Drawing heavily on Sir Thomas More’s account, Richard III is portrayed as a criminal and tyrant by Shakespeare. Scholars have pointed out that one of the play’s central themes is the notion of fate as seen through the tension between free will and fatalism in Richard’s actions and speech.

Director Donald Hicken

Before joining ASC, Donald Hicken was an award-winning educator who retired in 2015 after 36 years with the Baltimore School for the Arts. He has been a mentor to actors Jada Pinkett Smith, Tracie Thoms, and Shalita Grant. Among other former students are Josh Charles and Tupac Shakur, the late American rap legend. Hicken was one of two finalists for the Tony Awards’ Excellence in Theater Education.

ASC’s Mission

The Annapolis Shakespeare Company describes themselves as “the premiere professional theatre company in Annapolis” and the only one in the region devoted to producing plays by Shakespeare and other classics. Their mission: Produce bold, re-imagined, entertaining and accessible interpretations of classical and contemporary plays and musicals with a core commitment to the works of Shakespeare and other major dramatists.”
