Historic Inn, LodgingNow entering their fourth season as a fully professional theater group, the Annapolis Shakespeare Company (ASC) maintains its outstanding reputation as the top regional company for Shakespeare and the classics based in Maryland. In January 2017, they made the move to an impressive new 8,100 square foot facility featuring a 99-seat blackbox theatre that features a spacious lobby bar. However, their next production of Shakespeare’s The Tempest will be performed under the stars at the Charles Carroll House, which was one of the Carroll family’s 18th Century homes and is known for its beautiful manicured gardens.

The Tempest

Written by William Shakespeare from 1610 to 1611 and considered by many scholars to be the last play he wrote alone, The Tempest is set on a remote island, where Prospero, a sorcerer and rightful Duke of Milan, plots his daughter Miranda’s restoration to her rightful place through illusion and manipulation. Conjuring a storm, he causes his usurping brother Antonio and the complicit King Alonso of Naples to think they are shipwrecked and marooned on the island. Prospero’s sorcery eventually results in the revelation of Antonio’s craven nature, the redemption of the King, and the marriage of Miranda to Alonso’s son, Ferdinand.

Schedule & Directors

ACS’s annual production of The Tempest will be performed under the summer stars in the gardens of the Charles Carroll House on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings at 7:30 p.m. from July 7 to July 23, 2017. Directed by Sally Boyett and Donald Hicken, the performances promise to be a skillful interpretation of Shakespeare’s work.

Boyett is ASC’s Founding Artistic Director with numerous directing and choreography credits and a distinguished actress as well. She is also an accomplished ballerina and has performed with the Joffrey Workshop. Before joining ASC, Donald Hicken was an award-winning educator who retired from the Baltimore School for the Arts after 36 years in 2015. He has been the mentor to actors such as as Jada Pinkett Smith, Tracie Thoms, and Shalita Grant. His other former students are Josh Charles and Tupac Shakur, the late American rap legend. Hicken was one of two finalists for Tony Awards’ award for theater education.
