If you are in the mood for a charming romantic comedy under the stars, the Annapolis Shakespeare Company (ASC) is presenting Love’s Labour’s Lost by William Shakespeare over three summer weekends during July 2018 in Maryland’s scenic and historic seaside capital. Approaching its fifth season as a fully-professional theater group, ASC remains the premier regional company for Shakespeare and the classics based in Maryland.

Overview

One of Shakespeare’s early comedies, Love’s Labour’s Lost is believed to have been written for a royal performance before Queen Elizabeth I at the Inns of Court in the mid-1590s. The humorous tale revolves around the King of Navarre and his three friends after they vow to abstain from women in order to study and fast for three years. Their abstinence is soon disrupted by the arrival of the Princess of France and her ladies in waiting.

Although the plot has no obvious basis in history, royal personages of the era are the inspiration for the four main male characters. Love’s Labour’s Lost has some interesting Shakespearean trivia. It contains the longest scene, the longest single word, honorificabilitudinitatibus, and perhaps the longest speech of all Shakespeare’s plays.

Schedule & Directors

ACS’s production of Love’s Labour’s Lost will be performed over three weekends under the moon and stars. The shows are scheduled for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings at 7:30 p.m. from July 13 to July 29, 2018. To be helmed by accomplished directors, Sally Boyet and Donald Hicken, the performances promise to feature acting performances of high caliber.

Boyet is ASC’s Founding Artistic Director, and she has many directing, acting, and choreography credits to her name. Before coming aboard ASC, Hicken was an award-winning director who had recently retired from the Baltimore School for the Arts after more than three decades of teaching. He mentored Jada Pinkett Smith, Tracie Thoms, and Shalita Grant. He also had Josh Charles and Tupac Shakur, the late American rap legend, under his wing.
