Annapolis Historic InnOn Saturday, January 27, 2018, the Annapolis Opera will perform The Billy Goats Gruff: A Children’s Opera, their novel adaptation of a classic Norwegian fairy tale. By setting the performance to favorite opera arias, the organizers believe their original work will be the ideal way for sharing the enchantment of live opera with your children.

Source for Adaptation

Three Billy Goats Gruff is a Norwegian fairy tale collected by Peter Christen Asbjørnsen and Jørgen Moe in their book, Norske Folkeeventyr, which was first published between 1841 and 1844.

The story uses the familiar “eat-me-when-I’m-fatter” plot. The plot begins by introducing three goats. The grass where they live is almost gone, so they must cross a river to reach greener pastures in order to eat and fatten up. Unfortunately, the bridge they must cross is the residence of an ugly and frightening troll, who will eat anyone trying to cross. One by one, each goat must find a way to pass by the troll to safety.

Annapolis Opera History

During 1972, artists from the Annapolis Summer Garden Theater Youth Group banded together and founded the Annapolis Opera Company (AOC). Although their offer of the title role for their first production, Gian-Carlo Menotti’s The Medium, was declined by esteemed performer and producer Martha Wright, she accepted the job of producer and eventually became AOC’s first President.

From the very beginning, Annapolis supported AOC, which used the Naval Academy, St. John’s College, Annapolis High School, and the Hilton Hotel ballroom as its first venues. In 1979, the company found its permanent and current home as a founding resident company at the Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts.
