Constructed in 1875, the Thomas Point Shoal Light Station watches over the Chesapeake Bay as it stands on the mouth of the South River. Thomas Point was the replacement for two stone lighthouses that had been ravaged by the sea. It was the only manned lighthouse left in the Chesapeake Bay by 1964.
The U.S. Coast Guard was ready to tear it down and build an automated steel tower in 1972. Fortunately, many Americans protested, concerned that the lighthouse’s fine architectural features would be lost to history. Built with cast iron and wood, Thomas Point is 43 feet tall and hexagonally shaped with a red roof topped by a square black lantern.
National Historic Landmark
In 1975, the Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse was chosen for the National Register of Historic Places. After being automated by the Coast Guard in 1986, the lighthouse became a National Historic Landmark in 1999. Only nine American lighthouses have been granted this status, and Thomas Point makes sure you are aware of its remarkable distinction by sounding its foghorn every 15 seconds.
