The United States Naval Academy, also known as USNA, is located in Annapolis, Maryland and was founded in 1845. It is a 4-year undergraduate college that focuses on science, technology, engineering and math. In order to be accepted to this prestigious academy, students must be nominated by a US Senator, US Congressman, US Vice President, US President, or a Medal of Honor recipient. This academy prepares the students to become officers in the Navy and the U.S. Marines, and they are called Midshipmen. Tuition is fully funded by the Navy in exchange for active duty after graduation. Participation in athletic activities is highly encouraged.
Some well known people who attended the United States Naval Academy include Senator John McCain and President Jimmy Carter, astronaut William McCool, and football great Roger Staubach.
Guided walking tours of the United States Naval Academy and its beautiful grounds are available starting from the Armel-Leftwich Visitor’s Center Monday through Saturday from 10 AM to 3 PM and Sunday 10 AM to 3 PM. You can choose from individual or group tours. The groups require 16 people. Profits from the tours and merchandise sold at the gift shop benefits the Brigade of the Midshipmen.
The Historical Tour takes 1 hour and 15 minutes. It includes learning about the history and current events of this beautiful campus along with visiting Lejeune Hall, Bancroft Hall, Tecumseh Court, Herndon Monument, Main Chapel (when open) and the Crypt of John Paul Jones, Revolutionary War hero.
Other types of tours are also available including field trips for grades 4th through 12th grade. Also Corporate Leadership Training Tours lasting two hours are available, which include a corporate team building program that introduces the education and leadership training that students who attend the United States Naval Academy receive to prepare them to become Navy and Marine Corps officers.
